Alberta is a major player in oil and gas worldwide. All energy development projects generate waste at one or more stages of their life cycles. Ensuring that energy development in Alberta is sustainable and accountable, it is crucial for companies to manage their facilities and implement programs that will proactively reduce emissions.

In Alberta, the oil and gas industry is the largest source of methane emissions. 70% of provincial methane emissions and 25% of all emissions come from the upstream oil and gas sector.

Cutting methane emissions is a cost-effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Alberta is working to reduce methane emissions from upstream oil and gas operations with one approach; through Fuel, Flare & Vent regulations with the AER.

Oil and gas companies must manage all waste at their facilities. Flaring and venting are two ways in which companies can dispose of their waste gases.

What is Flaring & Venting?

Flaring

Flaring is controlled burning that happens during production and processing. Fuel or waste gas is ignited at the end of a flare stack (a long metal tube up which the gas is sent) which causes the flame. Flaring is essential to the safety of operations, reducing facility pressures in non-routine or emergency events.

Venting

Venting is a controlled release of gases into the atmosphere during production. Gases are typically natural gas or other hydrocarbon vapours, water vapour, and other gases, such as carbon dioxide, separated in the processing of oil or natural gas.

Flaring & Venting Measurement & Regulations

Gas flaring is one of the most challenging energy and environmental problems facing the world today. There is a lot of technology available to address the problem of gas flaring and the policy regulations required are largely understood. For example, the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) uses Directive 60 to regulate flaring, venting and incinerating at oil and natural gas operations. Most provinces within Canada have very similar policies to reduce natural gas flare. Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia have the greatest concentration of oil and gas facilities in Canada and also have the most comprehensive rules and regulations for flaring, venting and incineration.

Software

So How Does FFV Software Help?

Software will ensure the reliability, completeness and accuracy of flare data. It’s essential that oil and gas facilities effectively manage their fuel, flare, and vent data.

Software allows your operators to efficiently log updates into the system so that your organization can access all fuel, flare, and vent data results in real time. Integrating a software system for your fuel, flare, and vent will save you time and money when it comes to reporting, analysing, and managing data.

Finding a software that allows your operations team to manage all activities in a user friendly environment, to track routine and non-routine fuel, flare and vent activity, can be found in Intricate’s comprehensive software called FFVS (Fuel Flare Vent System).  Intricate’s FFVS is an advanced software system designed to manage data collection, calculations, logging, reports, and analytics relating to fuel, flare and vent by centralizing all your data into one single repository.  Click here to watch a demo.

Fuel Flare Vent Oil & Gas Software by Intricate

Did you know that Intricate also provides consulting services in the field of fuel, flare and vent? Intricate’s Measurement and Emissions Specialists can work with their clients to provide advisory services or assist with setting up fuel, flare and vent programs – such as methane reduction strategies and manuals. In a continuously evolving regulatory environment, it is critical to comply with the Alberta Energy Regulatory (AER). Our measurement consulting team operates at a field and corporate level to allow reporting operators in Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia to add value through practical implementation strategies. Fuel, flare and vent regulatory requirements are also reviewed and aligned within the reporting operators EPAP program for submission and declaration in Petrinex.
